Dumpster Size
How Much Weight Is A Dumpster Able To Hold?
The weight limits for temporary dumpsters depend on what you’re throwing away and how big the dumpster is. The most a dumpster truck can carry is 10 tonnes, or 20,000 pounds, but limits are often set between 2 and 6 tonnes, or 4,000 to 12,000 pounds, to meet road safety rules.
How Can You Tell When A Trash Can Is Full?
Most trash compactors use system pressure to figure out whether or not they are full. When the hydraulics of the trash compactor reach a certain pressure, a pressure switch turns on. This tells the programmable logic controller (PLC) that the compactor is full.
It doesn’t work to put 15 yards of trash in a 10-yard container. It will end up costing more because it is likely that the materials will need to be picked up and dropped off again before the project is done.

It’s important to know the sizes and measurements of roll-off dumpsters so you can choose the right size container for your project. Usually, roll-off dumpsters come in four different sizes: 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards. Don’t put too much in the trash can.
If a dumpster is too small, it may be tempting to get around it by piling trash on top of the rim. Do not do it. If trash is piled on top, it is a road hazard, and the dumpster service can’t legally take it away. Most drivers will leave the job site, and the trash won’t be picked up until the debris is cleared away, which will cost extra.
Some drivers may jump up and throw things into your dumpster to make it level. In this case, a “overfilling fee” will be added, and the trash that is left over will still need to be thrown away.
20 Yard Dumpster
A 20-yard dumpster is the right size for a wide range of projects and can hold about 10 pickup truck loads of trash and debris.
This is one of the most common dumpster sizes because of how cheap it is, how little space it takes up, and how much it can hold.
What Can You Put In A 20-Yard Dumpster?
Medium clean-up job in the basement, garage, or attic
Taking up floors or carpets in a big house
400 sq ft deck removal
2,500–3,000 square feet of shingles for the roof (single layer)
40 Yard Dumpster
A dumpster that’s 40 yards long can hold 40 cubic yards of trash.
Again, dumpster sizes and measurements can be different, but a typical 40-yard dumpster is 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet high.
A 40-yard dumpster is perfect for big home projects, business clean-ups, and industrial uses.
What Can You Put In A 40-Yard Dumpster?
A large house needs new windows or siding.
Business roof tear off
Clean up a business or office building
Debris from a new building or a major addition (larger home)
A lot of trash, paper, or cardboard left over from building work
How Much And What Kind Of Waste?
It’s hard to guess how much junk you have, especially if you need a dumpster for construction waste or household trash. A mistake that can cost a lot of money is picking a dumpster that is too small. If you try to save money by cramming your trash into a dumpster that’s too small, you’ll end up paying a lot more.
The best case scenario is that you have to figure out how to get rid of the extra trash later. Worst case, you have to pay for two dumpsters to get rid of all the trash, which immediately doubles your budget. You can avoid all of this by measuring your rental dumpster if you’re not sure if your trash will fit.
Size up costs less than $100 on average and can save you a lot of money in the long run. Rent a dumpster from a company near you. If you’ve never rented a roll-off dumpster before, it can be hard to choose the right size, but the people you rent from are very good at helping you make the best choice for your needs.
Almost always, it’s cheaper to rent a dumpster from a local company than from a large, national waste company. Hometown makes it easy to find locally owned dumpster companies in your area, read verified customer reviews, and get free quotes from as many providers as you want. We suggest that you get at least three quotes to make sure you get the best price and service.
